SAN FRANCISCO - While San José State's women's tennis team was guaranteed not to repeat Thursday's 3-0 record by virtue of two of its players facing off head to head, Friday's performance was still another strong showing for the Spartans at the California Tennis Club.
Marie Klocker stole the show in quarterfinal singles play by knocking off the 36th-ranked singles player in the country and top seed in the tournament, Madison Westby of USC. Klocker barely edged Westby, 6-4, in the first set before slamming the door with a 6-0 triumph in the second.
"To be honest, at the beginning of Marie's match we had no idea what her opponent's ranking was," head coach Chad Skorupka said. "I try not to tell the players what the rankings are. This match was about the first set - whoever won it would be in control. The second set I think her opponent zoned out a little and Marie took advantage of that."
Sybille Gauvain defeated fellow Spartan Gaelle Rey by a 6-2, 6-3 tally to join Klocker in Saturday's semifinals, giving San José State half of the remaining competitors in the singles bracket.
Earlier in the morning, the doubles tandem of Klocker and Rey downed Westby and USF's Shanna Dos Santos, 8-3, to advance to the semifinals. Gauvain and Pacific's Cristina Saenz De Buruaga fought hard before eventually falling, 8-6, to Pepperdine's duo of Laura Bulbe and Dzina Milovanovic.
On Saturday, Klocker and Rey get the action started with an 8:00 a.m. showdown against USF's Andrea Ka and Thyra Taune, the top doubles team in the tournament. At 1:30 p.m., Guavain will take on Ka and Klocker will square off with Gulbe in the singles semis.
"Gaelle and Marie have a good matchup for doubles, and if they get off to a good start this team can do some amazing things," Skorupka said. "We are familiar with Sybille's opponent and look forward to a strong performance from Sybille."
