Women's Tennis On Wrong End Of Hard-Fought Semifinal Matches

Sept. 19, 2015

Final Stats

SAN FRANCISCO - San José State's women's tennis team battled to the wire in Saturday's semifinal action at the California Tennis Club, but came up short in all three of its matches.

Andrea Ka and Thyra Tuane, the top doubles team in the tournament, jumped out to a 6-3 lead over Marie Klocker and Gaelle Rey before the Spartans' duo roared back to tie it up at six apiece. Ka and Taune would go on to win the next two games to secure an 8-6 win and advance to the finals.

Later in the day, Klocker took the first set, 6-4, against Pepperdine's Laura Gulbe, but Gulbe responded with 6-1 and 7-5 wins.

Sybille Gauvain's matchup with Ka on the other side of the bracket was neck and neck until the end as well, with Ka prevailing by scores of 6-2, 6-7(5) and 7-6(6).

Saturday marked the conclusion of what was a successful start to the 2015-16 season for the Spartans. All three participants advanced to the semifinals in singles and/or doubles, highlighted by Klocker's straight-set upset of USC's Madison Westby, the top seed and 36th-ranked singles player in the country.

"Overall I am pleased with how we did in our first fall tournament," head coach Chad Skorupka said. "I told Marie, Gaelle and Sybille we are looking at the big picture and these results are putting us in position to get better each time we compete."

The Spartans return to the court when they travel to Berkeley for the Cal Invitational on Oct. 2-4.
