Fresno, Calif.-Senior Tyanna Roy made her team-high 17th kill of the night count as it gave the San José State volleyball team a 3-2 win (25-21, 18-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-12) at Fresno State Thursday night in the opening Mountain West match for both teams.
Roy led all hitters with a season-high 17 kills on the night and hit .317. Three other Spartans recorded double-digit kills. Nandyala Gama had 11 kills and a team-best six blocks (1 solo, 5 assists). Sara Hibbs and Giulia Gávio each had 10 kills, and Gávio hit a team-high .317 (17-4-41).
Allison Meehan recorded her first double-double of the season with 42 assists and 11 digs. Three other players had double-digit digs - Luiza Andrade with 13, Yavianliz Rosado with 12, and Hana Tresnáková with 10.
The Spartans had not won their first conference match of the season since 2012. That season, San José State opened the conference portion of the schedule (then the Western Athletic Conference) with a 3-0 win over Idaho in Spartan Gym.
San José State (9-5, 1-0) led by as many as seven points in the first set at 24-17 and won the set on a Bulldog hitting error. The team had its best hitting set at .297 with 15 kills on 37 attempts and only four errors.
Fresno State (8-7, 0-1) led the entire second set, winning 25-18. The Spartans did make a mini run as the team trailed 22-11 and got to within six at 24-18.
The two teams battled back-and-forth in the third set with seven tied scores and six lead changes. The Spartans took the lead for good at 23-22 on a Gávio kill and won the set on another Gávio set 25-22.
Fresno State used a 14-5 run in the fourth set to win 25-23. The Spartans jumped out to an 18-11 lead, but the Bulldogs slowly chipped away at the lead, taking it for good at 24-23.
In the deciding set, San José State took a 4-3 lead on a Tresnáková kill and pushed the lead out to 8-4. Fresno State fought back to tie the set at 9-9, before San José State led 12-9 on a Meehan ace and forced a Bulldog timeout. Roy slammed the ball down in the middle back of the Bulldog defense for the 15-12 win.
The Spartans finish the month of September with a road match at UNLV this Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
