BURLINGTON, Iowa â€" The San José State men's golf team shot a seven-over 295 in the first round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge and is tied for ninth place out of 15 teams.
With two more rounds to play on the par-72, 7,223 yard Spirit Hollow golf course, the Spartans are 26 shots behind team leader North Carolina State who are twelve shots ahead of the field. North Carolina State opened the Golfweek Conference Challenge with a 19-under par 269.
"We're not happy. We didn't handle the wind as well as we should have. We hold ourselves to a higher standard than what we saw," said San José State head coach John Kennaday.
Sophomore Scott Munger was the low man for the Spartans shooting a two-under 70, good for a ninth place tie individually, four behind the co-leaders: David Cooke and Nolan Mills from North Carolina State, Raymond Knoll from Iowa and Austin James from Charleston Southern. Munger's round included an eagle on the 17th.
"Scotty's eagle was a nice shot as he knocked it in from about 100 yards. He had a little shelf, threw it up there and it spun in," said Kennaday.
Senior Cody Blick shot an even-par 72, starting the day with two birdies in the first two holes before bogeying the par-3 holes on the seventh and 15th. Blick finished third at last year's tournament.
Senior Taylor Bromley and junior college transfer Matthew Murray both made the turn at even-par but struggled on the back-nine to finish at four-over 76 and five-over 77, respectively. Sophomore Matthew Ashley shot a seven-over 79.
TEAM STANDINGS AND LOOKING AHEAD TO TOMORROW:
Atlantic Coast Conference representative North Carolina State had four golfers in the top-seven led by David Cooke and Nolan Mills who both shot six-under 66. Charleston Southern at seven-under 281 and Iowa, third at 284 were the other two teams in the field to finish under par for 18 holes.
In Saturday's second round, the Spartans will play along side the reigning national champion, LSU, along with Southern Illinois. They will tee off at 9:15 a.m. CT from the 10th hole.
"We get to play with the reigning national champions. You never know what the weather conditions will be as we just have to handle what is given to us. It's a matter of being able to handle it best," said Kennaday.
