SAN JOSE, Calif. --- Running Back Tyler Ervin set a San José State single-game rushing record, running for 300-yards as the Spartans recaptured the Valley Trophy in a 49-23 rout over the Fresno State Bulldogs at Spartan Stadium, Saturday, September 26.
Ervin rushed for three touchdowns on a personal best 42 carries, finding the goal line twice in the opening quarter, each on a 2-yard touchdown run, giving the Spartans (2-2, 1-1 MWC) a 14-0 lead. San José State never looked back.
Following a 9-yard gain on a direct snap from the wildcat formation on the Spartans opening drive, Ervin punched the ball in for his first 2-yard score. Quarterback Joe Gray connected with a wide open Ervin for a 24-yard completion to set up the running back's second 2-yard score to end the quarter.
In an impressive performance at quarterback, Gray completed 20 of his 23 passes for 252 yards, matching his career touchdowns in a game with three.
Hansell Wilson grabbed his first touchdown catch of the season on a 20-yard pass up the middle from Gray, giving the Spartans a 21-7 lead with 3:52 left in the half.
At the halfway mark, the Spartans held the Bulldogs (1-3, 0-1) to 93-yards and four first downs. Fresno State didn't earn a first down until the 10-minute mark of the second quarter. San Jose State led 21-10 at halftime.
On the Spartans' opening drive in the third quarter, Ervin found a big gap created by San José State's offensive line to pick up 30 yards and his third score on the ground. Ervin tied his person best for rushing scores.
Gray got his second score when he found wide receiver Tim Crawley cutting across the middle for a 49-yard touchdown pass late in the third. The catch was a career long reception for Crawley and his first touchdown of the season.
For his third touchdown of the night to pull away from the Bulldogs, Gray connected with tight end Billy Freeman for a 9-yard touchdown early in the final quarter.
The Spartans' final touchdown come with 5:03 left when Jimmy Pruitt took a 27-yard interception back for six points. The interception was Pruitt's second of the season.
San Jose State's defense held Fresno State to 247 yards. Linebacker Christian Tago led the Spartans with 10 total tackles with Pruitt adding seven more.
The Bulldogs' quarterback Ford Childress completed 19-of-32 passes for 159yards and two touchdowns.
