Men's Golf 11th After Two Rounds At Golfweek Conference Challenge

Sept. 26, 2015

BURLINGTON, Iowa - San José State men's golfer Cody Blick shot a bogey free seven-under 65 (72-65-137) in the second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge, good for second place on the player leader board. Blick is four shots behind the leader, Raymond Knoll from the University of Iowa, who is at 11-under par.

"Cody's been working really hard on his game and we're seeing the progress from it. It's a good sign. We still have 18 holes left but he had a good round and put himself in contention" said Spartans head coach John Kennaday.

Despite Blick's efforts, the Spartans squad fell two spots down from the first round and currently sits in 11th place after shooting four-over 292. The Spartans are 11-over (295-292-587) as a team in the first two rounds of the 54-hole tournament at the par-72, 7,223 yard Spirit Hollow golf course.

"We can't have 78s in our scorecard. We can't compete that way. Its hard to swallow such scores in such a good tournament as I need to coach them better," said Kennaday.

Sophomore Scott Munger, who was the low man for the Spartans in round one shooting a 70, carded a six-over 78 today after a steady start where he was even-par through the first eight holes. Munger is currently tied for 39th at four-over par (70-78-148).

First year Spartan Matthew Murray had the second best score among the Spartans in round two, shooting a two-over 74, including going one-under on the back-nine. Murray sits tied for 54th place at seven-over par (77-74-151).

Sophomore Matthew Ashley (79-75-154) and senior Taylor Bromley (76-78-154) are both at +10, tied for 64th place.

HAWKEYES ALSO ATOP THE TEAM LEADER BOARD

In round one, North Carolina State opened the Golfweek Conference Challenge with a 19-under par 269 to open a 12-shot lead. However, tournament host University of Iowa Hawkeyes shot 15-under 273 in the second round to overtake NC State. Iowa is currently 19-under par (284-273-557) and NC State is 12-under (269-295-564).

The Golfweek Conference Challenge concludes on Sunday with one final round beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CT. Fans can follow all of the round three action with live scoring updates provided by Golfstat.
