Spartans late charge not enough at Aggie Roundup

Davis, Calif.-----Heading into the Aggie Roundup searching for their second win of the season, the San José State Spartans (1-7, 0-0 MPSF) are still looking after falling to the California Bears, 17-7, and Santa Clara Broncos, 16-10, at UC Davis on Saturday, September 26.

California 17, San Jose State 7

With the Spartans spreading the ball around to seven different goal scorers, San José State lost to an early scoring California Bears (8-2, 0-0 MPSF) for the second time this season.

Scoring San José State's only first half goals were Junior Scott Reynolds and freshman Cade Baldridge. Grabbing second half goals were freshman Parker Blacksten and juniors Igor Miljan, John Moon and Vladimir Kazanskiy.

"We had a much improved offensive game against Cal this week," said Head Coach Bruce Watson. The Spartans only had one goal against the Bears at the NorCal Invitational.

Santa Clara 16, San Jose State 10

In the third meeting in four weeks, the Spartans fourth quarter surge wasn't enough to come back against the Broncos after giving up 11 goals in the first half.

San José State trailed 11-1 going into halftime and outscored Santa Clara (4-7, 0-0 WWPA) 9-5 after the break, scoring four goals in the last 1:35 in the match.

On the offensive attack, freshman Alek Dendall led San Jose State second half offense attack with three goals, two in the third quarter and one of the four goals scored late.

Baldridge joined juniors Keanu Martinez and Vladimir Kazanskiy with two goals each. Martinez scored his goals at the 1:35 minute and 0:10 second mark to close out the game. Freshman Zachary Scudder added one goal.

"Baldridge continues to play with tremendous intensity," Watson said. "Scudder and Dendall made an impact in both games."

The Spartans split the cage time between sophomore Matej Matijevic and freshmen Adam Sandor and Cole Williams.

Leading Santa Clara in scoring was Julian Fraser. The Broncos lead the season series of the Spartans 2-1.

San José State will open the second day of the Aggie Roundup, Sunday, September 27, in an exhibition contest against Diablo Valley College followed by afternoon matches with Fresno Pacific and No. 2 ranked Stanford.
