Fort Collins, Colo. --- Zoe Makrigiannis recorded the 12th individual shutout of her Spartan career, and Darriell Franklin booted in her third game-winner of the season in a 2-0 victory over Colorado State in Mountain West play Sunday afternoon.
The win gives the Spartans a Mountain West weekend sweep after they took care of Wyoming, 1-0, on Friday. It's the first time since 2009 that San Jose State has begun conference play with a 2-0 start.
"This is an awesome win for our team and program," said Spartans' head coach Lauren Hanson. "I'm proud of the way we competed for a full 90 minutes. We did a great job controlling the possession, and our defense was very sound."
It was the second shutout in as many matches for Makrigiannis, who takes over as the all-time leader in SJSU women's soccer history for most individual shutouts, passing Amee Brown.
Playing behind a solid back line, Makrigiannis made two big saves to preserve the shutout.
"We competed hard to get that shutout not only for the team but for Zoe," Hanson said. "It's huge that she broke the record today."
Part of the success on defense was the Spartans' dominance on offense. San Jose State (4-4-2, 2-0-0 MW) outshot Colorado State (3-6-2, 0-1-1 MW) 8-1 in the first 30 minutes, and the trend continued throughout the match for a final tally of 20-7.
Franklin put the Spartans up 1-0 in the 42nd minute with her fifth goal in the last six matches. It was the second game-winner in as many matches for the freshman, and she now has three on the year. Samantha Orodpour was credited with the assist.
Franklin returned the favor in the 47th minute when she connected a pass into Orodpour who put in a touch-shot goal to give SJSU the 2-0 lead.
"Both Darriell and Sam made two amazing shots," Hanson said. Darriell is playing like a veteran out there, and the way we controlled possession today is what led to us taking good shots in front of the goal."
Darlene Rodriguez, Dorthe Hoppius and Daria Manzano also recorded shots on goal in the match.
SJSU returns to Spartan Soccer Field next week to continue Mountain West play against Boise State (Oct. 2) and Utah State (Oct. 4).
