BURLINGTON, Iowa - The San José State men's golf team improved their score in each round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge and finished 10th at 12-over 876 (295-292-289-876) at the par-72, 7,223 yard Spirit Hollow golf course.
"We made a step in the right direction today so we're pleased with that," said Spartans head coach John Kennaday, in reference to the three shot improvement the team made from round to round.
Individually, Cody Blick led the way by shooting eight-under 208 for the tournament (72-65-71-208) to finish tied for third along with Charleston Southern's Austin James. They were three shots behind co-medalists Raymond Knoll from the University of Iowa and Jeremy Gandon from Kansas State, who eagled the last hole to match Knoll's score of 11-under.
"Cody had a good tournament. He would've liked to have gotten the win but we'll pick up the pieces and figure out what to do and work on it," said Kennaday.
Scott Munger had an up and down Sunday with five birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey to finish at one-over (73) for the day and five-over 221 (70-78-73-221) for the tournament placing him tied for 42nd.
Taylor Bromley bounced back today from a rough second round by going one-under (71) to finish nine-over (76-78-71-225) for the tournament alongside teammate Matthew Murray (77-74-74-225), tying them for 51st.
Matthew Ashley finished in 65th place at 14-over (79-75-76-230).
"Its nice to get started with the season. We have a very capable team but we've got to show up and be there ready to play," said Kennaday at the conclusion of the tournament. "We now have a good idea of where we're at and what we need to do and get working on it, pronto."
Tournament host, Iowa, maintained their second round lead by capturing the team title shooting 22-under (284-273-285-842), three shots ahead of runner-up North Carolina State (269-295-281-845).
The Spartans play next at the Alister Mackenzie Invitational, October 12 and 13 in Fairfax, Calif.
