Freshman forward Darriell Franklin of the women's soccer team, and senior goalkeeper for the men's soccer team Emmanuel Espinoza are the Spartan Foundation Student-Athletes of the Month, presented by ScholarShare.
Franklin netted the game-winner in a 2-1 victory for the women's soccer team over Sacramento State on Aug. 30. The same week, she put an equalizer in the back of the net in SJSU's 1-1 draw at UC Santa Barbara on Aug. 28. The Mountain West named her the Offensive Player of the Week for her contributions, which helped the team to a 2-1-1 record through the first four matches of the season.
Espinoza started each of the Spartans three games in August, two exhibitions and the season opener at Loyola Marymount. In 208 minutes, he stopped nine of the 11 shots, which reached his line. Four times in the opening half at LMU, Espinoza stopped shots from point-blank range. Ultimately, he was the hard luck loser in a 1-0 result. The decisive goal came after a turnover by a Spartans' defender, which gave a lone LMU attacker the ball deep in the box.
