Senior running back Tyler Ervin and middle blocker Sara Hibbs of the women's volleyball team are the September Spartan Foundation Student-Athletes of the Month, presented by ScholarShare.
Ervin set a San José State single-game record with 300 rushing yards on 42 carries in the Spartans' 49-23 win over rival Fresno State in a Mountain West football game on Sept. 26. He accumulated 345 all-purpose running yards and singlehandedly out-gained Fresno State, 345 to 247. His 300 rushing yards and 345 all-purpose running yards are the best totals by a Football Bowl Subdivision player for the first four weeks of the 2015 season. Ervin finished September the national leader in all-purpose running yards per game, third in rushing yards per game and tied for fourth in points scored per game. He is one of two players nationally to score two or more touchdowns in each game played in September.
Hibbs' team-best 2.81 kills per set helped lead the Spartans to an 8-3 record in the month of September. She was tops on the team in hitting with 121 kills, and hit .313 for the month. Hibbs guided SJSU to the UMass Lowell Invitational title, the program's first tournament title since 2011. Hibbs hit .427 and averaged 3.82 kills per set during the title run, and won Most Valuable Player at the tournament's end. She hit a career-best .591 in a win over Evansville and backed it up with a .565 in a victory over Holy Cross.
