Colorado Spring, Colo. --- The theme of the season for the San Jose State women's soccer team has been big wins on the road in Mountain West play. Sunday, the Spartans continued that theme with perhaps their biggest win yet, a 2-0 victory at Colorado College.
Darriell Franklin's sixth goal of the season and an 89th minute dagger by Dorthe Hoppius fueled the Spartans to a win in the battle between two teams with the best records in the Mountain West.
"This is a statement win for the team," said San Jose State head coach Lauren Hanson. "It shows that we have a great mentality right now."
San Jose State (7-5-2, 5-1-0 MW) came into Sunday having survived a barrage of late attacks in a 1-0 win over Air Force. But Sunday, the Spartans' offense was on the throttle for the entire 90 minutes, outshooting Colorado College (6-8-1, 4-2-0 MW) 12-3.
Franklin took a touch pass from Daria Manzano inside the box and put a shot in low past the keeper in the 34th minute to put SJSU up, 1-0. Maricruz Chapa was also credited with an assist after her through-ball set up the play. It became the fourth game-winner of the season for Franklin.
The majority of the final 45 minutes was played in the Colorado College half. Hoppius dribbled the ball up from midfield and from about 30 yards away, blasted a shot into the upper-left corner to give SJSU the 2-0 lead.
"It was just a solid team effort," Hanson added. "We learned a good lesson on Thursday and today we did a great job staying connected."
While San Jose State's offense dominated the day, Zoe Makrigiannis turned away the only shot on goal for the Tigers, and got her fifth shutout of the season. The senior keeper has now had back-to-back shutouts on both trips in Mountain West play. Makrigiannis has allowed only two goals in 585:05 of conference action.
The Spartans are undefeated on the road against conference foes and now 6-2-1 for the season. With the win, San Jose State keeps the best record in the Mountain West alongside San Diego State which defeated Wyoming on Sunday 2-1.
The team remains on the road next week for matches at New Mexico on Oct. 16 and at San Diego State on Oct. 18.
