Volleyball Wins Five-Set Thriller Over Wyoming

San José, Calif.--In a night where five Spartan volleyball players recorded double-digit kills, one recorded a double-double and another had 30 digs, the San José State volleyball team used a total-team effort to upset Wyoming, 3-2 (18-25, 25-22, 26-28, 25-14, 16-14) Thursday night in a Mountain West match at Spartan Gym.

Giulia Gávio led all hitters with 16 kills and hit .389 for the match (16-2-36). Tyanna Roy had 14 kills including the match winner. Hana Tresnáková recorded a season-best 13 kills, while Sara Hibbs and Nandayala Gama each had 11 kills.

Allison Meehan recorded her fourth double-double of the season and ninth of her career with a season-high 49 assists and a career-high 18 digs.

Yavianliz Rosado recorded a career-best 30 digs in the match, just the third Spartan to record 30 digs in a match (Kristal Tsukano and Jessie Shull) and the 11th player in school history to record 30 or more digs in a match. Rosado was just three assists shy of a rare double-double for a libero with her seven assists.

San José State (11-9, 3-4) improved its hitting every set after starting the match hitting -.032 in the first set. The hitting numbers improved over the next three sets, topping out at .273 (13-4-33) in the fourth set.

Despite being outblocked 18-7, the Spartans used a strong serve to make up the difference, recording a season-best 12 service aces, while limiting the Cowgirls (15-5, 5-3) to just three aces. Hibbs led the team with a career-best five aces, while Tresnáková added a season-high four aces. Jamie Hirai, Julie Sam and Rosado each had an ace.

After falling 25-18 to the Cowgirls in the first set, San José State came back to win the second set 25-22. The Spartans trailed 20-18, but then scored six straight points to take a 24-20 lead and won the set on a Hibbs solo block.

The two teams had nine tied scores in the third set as the Spartans fought off three set points. Wyoming got back-to-back kills from Reed Copeland to win 28-26.

The Cowgirls took a 1-0 lead to start the fourth set, but the Spartans scored the next four points to take a 4-1 lead and never looked back. Roy recorded her first of two set-winning kills for SJSU to win 25-14.

In the final set, San José State jumped out to an early 5-1 lead. The Spartans were up 11-6 before Wyoming started a comeback, scoring seven of the next nine points to tie the match at 13-13. The Cowgirls had match point at 14-13, before Roy's 13th kill tied the match at 14-14, and her 14th kill of the night gave San José State the 16-14 set win and 3-2 match victory.

The Spartans continue the four-match homestand this Saturday, October 17, as the team faces #21 Colorado State at 1 p.m.
