Oct. 16, 2015

Final Stats

Orem, Utah - The San José State men's soccer team fought back from a two goal deficit to tie its match in the 74th minute at Utah Valley, but a foul in the box set up a successful Wolverines' penalty kick and led to a 3-2 defeat for the Spartans in Western Athletic Conference action on Friday evening.

Trailing 2-0, 12 minutes into the second half, Spartan Uriel Ayala made a short touch to Jonathan Colunga. From 16 yards out, Colunga eluded a defender and placed his shot in the right corner of the goal, at the 57:36 mark, for his second tally of the year and second in as many games.

At the 73:37 mark, Darren Sinclair was fouled seven yards out side of the box to set the Spartans (4-8-0, 2-2-0 WAC) up with a direct kick. Colunga and freshman Luis Vargas, who hails from West Jordan, Utah, a 30-mile drive from Orem, lined up to take the set piece.

Colunga moved first. He ran at and jumped over the ball it to the right, which moved the Wolverines' wall just enough to give Vargas a window through which to attack. He hammered his attempt past the left side of the wall, though the spot created by Colunga's deek. The shot got past the diving UVU keeper and hit the inside of the right post for Vargas' first goal as a collegian.

With the equalizer scored, the teams traded single shots until the 87:24 mark.

The Wolverines' Skyler Milne got through the SJSU back line and was running onto a pass in the right side of the box. Petermann charged off his line to try to get to the ball before Milne. He arrived a fraction of a second late, getting the player's boots, but not the ball.

Milne lined up for the penalty kick and as Petermann went to his right, Milne shot to the left. It was UVU's and Milne's third goal of the night.

Petermann was the hard luck loser. He came on in the 27th minute after starter Emmanuel Espinoza was injured. Espinoza faced three shots, allowing two past his line in the 26:58 he was on the field. Petermann played 63+ minutes, making four vital saves which enabled the Spartans to remain in the game and mount its comeback.

Overall the Spartans were out shot 16-to-9, including being doubled up in shots on goal, 8-to-4. Three Spartans attempted two shots: Kyle O'Mahoney, Rory Knibbs and Colunga. Vargas, Jonathan Partida and Alex Alcaraz attempted a shot apiece.

Utah Valley (11-3-0, 4-1-0 WAC) got six shots from Karson Payton and Milne scored three times on his four shot attempts. In goal for the Wolverines, Collin Partee made two saves and gave up to goals.

The Spartans two goals are the most that Utah Valley have allowed on its home field this year and equals the most they have surrendered to any opponent in 2015.

San José State travels to Seattle, Wash., to face the No. 24-ranked Seattle University Redhawks on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
