SAN JOSE, Calif. ---- Holding the San José State's offense to 148 total yards, San Diego State's defense collected two turnovers as the Aztecs defeat the Spartans 30-7 at Spartan Stadium.
The Aztecs' (4-3, 3-0 MWC) win gives them control of the West Division in the Mountain West Conference as the Spartans (3-4, 2-2 MWC) remain in second place.
Throwing back-to-back interceptions to start the third quarter, leading to two San Diego State scores, quarterback Kenny Potter was 14-24 in passing for 113 yards.
San José State running back Tyler Ervin was held to 22 yards on 17 carries. His longest run of the night was eight yards.
San Diego State scored first when Donnel Pumphrey found the end zone on a 13 yard touchdown run early in the opening quarter. Pumphrey rushed for 152 yards on 20 carries.
Pumphrey scored again in the second quarter on a 38-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Maxwell Smith. The Aztecs signal caller was on target the entire night completing 10-of-14 passes for 144 yards without an interception.
Scoring San José State's only touchdown, Potter found the goal line on a 1-yard quarterback sneak concluding a 15-play drive to cut the Aztecs' lead to 14-7 in the second quarter. The touchdown was Potter's second of the season.
The Aztecs extended their lead to 17-7 when kicker Donny Hageman kicked a 31 yard field goal just before halftime.
Capitalizing on Potter's interceptions, Hageman kicked a 25 yard field goal and Chase Price rushed for a 1 yard touchdown, his first of the season, to give the Aztecs a 27-7 lead.
Hageman was three-for-three on field goals, making a 39-yard kick for his final attempt in the third quarter as San Diego State extended its lead, 30-7.
The Spartans are back at Spartan Stadium on Saturday, October 24, hosting the New Mexico Lobos.
