SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- San José State University women's cross country team finished second out of 18 Division I schools at the Santa Clara Invitational on Saturday. It was the best finish for the women's cross country squad since the 2011 season when they finished first at the Battle of the Bay meet.
The Spartans were once again led by Jennifer Beckingham as she has been the top Spartan finisher in each of the four meets this year. Beckingham completed the 6K course in 20:17.6 to finish seventh overall. The England native has finished no worse than 12th in the 2015 season.
The next three finishers for the Spartans were bunched up together as Adilene Aldapa came in at 21:18.4, good for 34th overall. The freshman from Santa Barbara, Calif. has finished as the second Spartan runner in each meet this year.
Jeanette Zambrano, running in her second race of the year finished 35th, just behind fellow freshman Aldapa, at 21:20.3. Lalida Maokahmphiou was 37th at 21:23.4.
"Jen Beckingham ran a solid race and so did Adilene and Jeanette. Lalida probably ran her best race of the season so that was huge for us," said Spartans cross country coach, Brad Wick.
Ashley Cahalan rounded off the Spartans top-five with a time of 21:51.1 placing her 67th.
While the spread time between the top and fifth Spartan finisher was over a minute and a half, the spread between the second and fifth Spartan finisher was 32.7 seconds.
Diana Orozco and Melanie Fujiwara were the displacers, finishing 76th and 89th.
"When all the points came in and the results showed us in second place, it was great to see that a lot of hard paid off for this invite. But in two weeks, that'll be the real test," said Wick referring to the Mountain West Conference Championship on Friday, October 30.
"Once you get to the conference meet, if we can keep it together, we can definitely beat some teams and really move up in the conference, which is what we're really aiming at," said Wick.
