Volleyball Starts Strong But Falls 3-1 To UNLV

San José, Calif.-- Giulia Gávio led all hitters on the floor with 15 kills, but the San José State volleyball team hit .075 in a 3-1 loss to UNLV Thursday night in a Mountain West match at Spartan Gym.

The Spartans started the match strong, hitting .333 in the first set to win 25-22. UNLV tied the set at 1-1, before the Spartans jumped out to an 8-4 lead and never relinquished the lead.

In the final three sets, San José State hit .056 with only 26 kills on 107 attempts and 20 errors. UNLV held the lead the entire second set to win 25-16. The Spartans took an early 4-1 lead in the third set, but the Rebels used a 5-1 run to take the lead for good at 6-5. UNLV had set point at 24-18, but the Spartans fought to score the next four points and got as close as 24-22 before the Rebels closed out the set at 25-22.

The final set found the two teams tied at 1-1 before UNLV went out to a 12-6 lead and won 25-13 to win the match 3-1.

Gávio was the only Spartan in double-digit kills for the night. Nandyala Gama had eight kills and led the Spartans with seven total blocks, two solo and five assists. Hana Tresnáková had six kills and 14 digs, while Tyanna Roy had seven kills and three blocks.

Yavianliz Rosado led the defense with 19 digs, while Luiza Andrade and Jamie Hirai each added nine digs. Rosado also had a team-high three service aces.

The Spartans host Fresno State this Saturday at Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets. First serve is set for noon, and admission is free to the match.
