SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Surpassing the 1,000 yard rushing mark this season, Spartans' running back Tyler Ervin led San Jose State to a 31-21 victory over the New Mexico Lobos at Spartan Stadium.
Off to the races early, Ervin rushed for a 71-yard touchdown on the Spartans' second offensive play of the game to give SJSU a 7-0 lead. Ervin was spectacular and durable. He finished with 263 yards on 36 carries and one touchdown and had runs of 41 and 50 yards to go along with his 12th rushing touchdown of the season.
New Mexico's Teriyon Gipson evened the score, 7-7, going the distance for a 79 yard rushing touchdown midway through the first. Gipson carried the ball nine times for 99 yards.
On the Lobos' next drive, linebacker Christian Tago prevented New Mexico from taking the lead early in the second, blocking Zack Rogers' 28 yard field goal attempt. The Lobos took a 14-7 lead with 6:25 left in the half when Diquon Woodhouse found the end zone on a 4-yard run.
Tying the Lobos at 14-14, quarterback Kenny Potter connected with wide receiver Hansell Wilson for a 35 yard touchdown pass on the Spartans next drive. Wilson had two receptions for 62 yards.
Throwing his second touchdown of the game, Potter connected with a wide open Billy Freeman for a 25 yard score with 18 second left in the half. San Jose State took a 21-14 into the half.
Spartans' cornerback Cleveland Wallace, III intercepted Lobos' quarterback Austin Apodoca at the San Jose State 38-yard line in the third quarter, leading to San Jose State's only second-half touchdown.
It was Potter who weaved his way through the defense and into the end zone for 12 yard rushing touchdown capping a 7-play, 51-yard drive. Potter completed 16 of 20 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 30 yards on the ground on nine carries.
Leading 28-14 going into the fourth quarter, the Spartan's kicker Austin Lopez connected for a season-long 43 yard field goal to extend the Spartans lead to 31-14.
Jhurell Pressley crossed the goal line on a 4 yard run for the final score of the game as the Lobos cut the Spartans lead to 31-21 with 7:46 left in the game.
San Jose State finished with 498 yards of total offense, 317 yards on the ground and 181 yards in the air. New Mexico (4-4, 2-2 Mountain West) was limited to 335 yards of total offense and 15 first downs. The Lobos were just 2-of-8 on 3rd down situations.
