Blick Finishes Tied For Third; Team 11th At Price's Give `Em Five Invitational

Oct. 25, 2015

EL PASO, Texas - San José State men's golf team struggled on the final day of the Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational shooting 10-over 298, finishing 11th out of 15 in the tournament at three-over 867 on the par-72, 7,307-yard Butterfield Trail golf course.

"Today was not a good day. We didn't get up-and-down and we didn't make a putt. Our short game needs a lot of work," said Spartans head coach John Kennaday after the round.

Cody Blick was the lone Spartan under par on Sunday, shooting two-under 70 which included four birdies and two bogeys. The Danville, Calif. native finished tied for third, along with Jonathan De Los Reye from St.Mary's (CA), with a three round total of 11-under 205 shooting 68, 67, and 70 in each round. Blick was the low Spartan scorer each day.

"Cody played great. He made the majority of the putts for us this week," said Kennaday.

Kevin Velo was the next low scorer for the Spartans at one-over for the day as well as the tournament, finishing tied for 39th (73-71-73-217). Velo's Sunday included an eagle and four birdies, along with three bogeys and two double-bogeys. The freshman has finished second among Spartans in each of the two tournaments he has played.

Taylor Bromley had the third counting score for the Spartans shooting five-over 77, finishing the tournament tied for 57th at five-over (73-71-77-221).

Matthew Murray had the fourth and final counting score for Sunday, shooting six-over 78, tied for 73rd overall at 10-over 226 for the tournament (72-76-78-226).

Henrik Sohlberg shot ten-over 82 in round three, and 19-over for the tournament (79-74-82-235).

"Not everybody is happy because we are more capable than the scores we are putting up. We have to address our short game," said Kennaday.

Representing San José State as an individual, Scott Munger shot eight-over 80, finishing the tournament tied for 57th with teammate Taylor Bromley.

Kansas won the fourth installment of the Price's Give 'Em Five Invitational by shooting the best round of tournament (-17) on Sunday to finish 279-276-271-826, eleven shots ahead of runner-up St.Mary's (CA).

Antoine Rozner of Missouri-Kansas City repeated as a champion by breaking the tournament record (198) by one stroke finishing at 197. Rozner and Spartan Cody Blick held the previous tournament record of 198 when they were co-champions last year.

The Spartans play next at The Gifford Collegiate in San Diego from November 2-4.
