Boulder City, Nev.-- My Leander and Elizabeth Schultz sit 1-2 in the individual standings as they made San José State University women's golf history in the first round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown Sunday at the Boulder Creek Golf Club outside of Las Vegas. The Spartan women's golf team is tied for first with Michigan at 13-under 275.
Leader shot a seven-under 65 in the first round to lead the tournament. She set the school record for low score in a round with her 65. Her seven-under par ties former Spartan Janice Moodie who had a seven-under 66 at the California Collegiate at the par-73 Stanford Golf Course in 1997.
Leander made seven birdies and 11 pars on her round, leaving her card free of bogeys. Starting her day on #6, she made a birdie to immediately go one-under par. Leander stayed there until making birdies on #11, #13 and #16 to go to four-under par after 13 holes played. Her final five holes found her making birdies on #1, #3 and #5.
"I played with no fear today," said Leander. "I love this course, and the conditions were good today. I did less thinking and just went out played golf. I had good drives and put the ball in good spots that were good birdie opportunities. I was not thinking about failure."
Schultz shot a six-under 66 and sits in second place. Her score tied four others in school history who had shot a 66 during their Spartan career. She started her day on #7 with a birdie, but a bogey on #8 put her back at even par. Schultz then birdied #9 to back to one-under par.
"I really don't get off to a good start on many of my rounds. Today, I birdied that first hole, bogeyed the next and then rebounded with another birdie. I am really working on keeping the past behind me and move on and do my best on the next shot or hole."
After a bogey on #11, Schultz made three birdies over her next seven holes and did not card a bogey the rest of her round. Returning to the front nine, she went par-par-birdie-par before reaching the par-5 #5.
"On #5, I focused on hitting my drive in the fairway. I had 240 yards to the hole and hit my 6-iron to get to within 74 yards. I was comfortable with that shot and hit the ball to within five feet of the hole. The ball then rolled in for my eagle.
"I have really been working on my wedge shots, and today that hard work paid off," said Schultz. "I had a lot of good wedge shots and reasonable chances for birdies."
Regan De Guzman recorded her fourth under-par round of the season with a one-under 71, and is tied for 40th. She made five birdies and nine pars during her round and played par golf or better for 17 of her 18 holes. She was even through her first 11 holes (#6-16) before a bogey on #17 put her at one-over. However, De Guzman rebounded with birdies on #18 to go back under par before a bogey on #3 left her at one-under for the day.
Cristina Glebova is tied for 66th at one-over 73, and made four birdies and 10 pars during the round. Alexandra Cooper is tied 94th at four-over 76 with 11 pars and a birdie made.
San José State is tied with Michigan at 275 in the team standings. Missouri is just two shots behind at 277, and, in all, 14 teams are within 10 shots of the top spot. Sixteen of the 19 teams shot under-par rounds on the day.
The Spartans set a school record with the 13-under 275 for the lowest single-round score. The team made 23 birdies during the round, tying Vanderbilt for the second-most made on the day.
"We had a phenomenal round today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "This is what we know we can do. The conditions were perfect as it was a little overcast with no wind, which made for optimal scoring conditions. We still have to hit good shots and make putts.
"On this course, you can be offensive during your play and go for birdie opportunities. This course setup gives the players an opportunity to make birdies. They can be aggressive in their play and be rewarded for it."
The Spartans play the second round with co-leader Michigan and Missouri, who is two shots behind the leaders. The players begin the second round with a shot gun start at 8 a.m.
