San Jose, Calif. --- The San José State Spartans men's water polo team was swept by No. 5-ranked Stanford and No. 6-ranked UC Santa Barbara at home and No. 19-ranked Harvard at Santa Clara's Rodeo Invitational over the weekend. The Spartans (3-19, 0-6 MPSF) have dropped five of their last six games to nationally ranked opponents.

No. 5 Stanford 17, San Jose State 4

With Stanford (16-6, 2-3 MPSF) jumping out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first on two goals by Bret Bonanni, Blake Grove put the Spartans on the board with goal at 3:23 mark. Connor Stapleton responded with a goal 21 seconds later to give the Cardinal a 3-1 lead going into the second period.

Cody Smith and Justin Roberto extended Stanford's lead to 5-1 before the San José State's John Moon and Alek Dendall scored consecutive goals to cut the Cardinal lead to 5-3. Stanford went into halftime leading 8-3 after goals scored by Adam Abdulhamid, Bonanni and Smith. Smith had two goals in the game.

The Cardinal scored six unanswered goals in the third, shutting out the Spartans to extend their lead to 14-3 going into the fourth. Parker Blacksten scored San José State's only goal in the final period with Stanford adding three more.

San José State goalkeeper Matej Matijevic played 21 minutes and made nine saves. Entering the match with three minutes left in the third, Adam Sandor had five saves for the Spartans.

Leading the Cardinal with three goals each were Bonanni, Smith and Kyle Enright.

No. 19 Harvard 10, San Jose State 8

San José State captured the lead against Harvard (14-8, 6-3 CWPA) early in the fourth but couldn't hold on in the final minutes as the Crimson beat the Spartans 10-8 at Santa Clara's Rodeo Tournament on Friday, October 23.

Trailing Harvard 2-0 after one period, San José State picked up two goals from Grove with Igor Miljan and Justin Contreras each adding a goal to tie the match, 4-4, at halftime.

The Spartans and Crimson matched goals in the third to keep the score tied, 6-6. Scoring for the Spartans in the quarter were Grove and Vladimir Kazanskiy. Grove led the San José Stated with three goals.

Miljan scored his second goal with 7:25 left in the final quarter to give San José State a 7-6 lead before giving up four unanswered goals to Harvard. Contreras score the Spartans final goal with 25 seconds left, giving him two goals against the Crimson.

Matijevic had 10 saves in the cage for the Spartans.

No. 6 UC Santa Barbara 13, San José State 4

Keeping the score close in the first half against No. 6-ranked UC Santa Barbara (13-8, 2-4 MPSF), the Spartans gave up nine goals in the second half to fall to the Gauchos 13-4 on Friday, October 23.

The Spartans' Miljan scored the first goal of the contest with a shot at 5:21 in the opening period. The Gauchos countered later in the first on a shot by Derick Shoemaker to tie the match at 1-1.

Shoemaker's goal kicked off an eight point scoring run that spanned three quarters with the Spartans trailing 4-1 at halftime. Breaking up UC Santa Barbara's scoring run was driver Keanu Martinez with a goals at 3:02 in the third. The Gauchos' led 8-2 after three periods.

Martinez led the Spartans in with three goals, picking up back-to-back goals in the fourth quarter. Leading the Gauchos in scoring was Reed Cotterill with three goals.

Starting in goal for the Spartans was Matijevic, making 15 saves in 28 minutes of actions.
