Boulder City, Nev.--The San José State University women's golf team kept its historic run going during the second round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown Monday at the Boulder Creek Golf Club just outside of Las Vegas. The Spartans continue to lead on both the team and individual leaderboards.
For the second consecutive round, San José State shot a school-record 275 for a two-round total of 550, and a four-shot lead over Michigan. The 36-hole total of 550 smashes the previous school record of 571 set at the 2009 Mountain View Collegiate and the 1993 Stanford Women's Intercollegiate. The Spartans lead the tournament in par-4 scoring at -7, and par-5 scoring at -20.
My Leander shot a five-under 67 in the second round and is at 12-under, 132, for the tournament, with a one-shot leader over Anna Newell of Tennessee. Leander set the school record for low 36-hole total with her 132, four shots better than Janice Moodie (1996-97) and Jennifer Brumbaugh (2011-12). Her 12-under par is also a school record for lowest score in relation to par through 36 holes.
Leander started her day on #1 with par-birdie-birdie-par before making her only bogey of the tournament on the par-5 #5. She then made three consecutive pars before a birdie on #9 found her a two-under after the front nine.
After a par on #10, Leander made an eagle on the par-4, 355-yard #11, as she used a pitching wedge from 109 yards to get the ball within a few feet of the hole and watched it roll in. Leander finished her round with six pars and a birdie on #15. Leander leads the tournament in par-4 scoring at -9 and has made 11 birdies over the two rounds.
Elizabeth Schultz shot a two-under 70 and is tied for fifth place at eight-under 136. She started the round with three consecutive pars before a bogey on #4, but rebounded with birdies on three of her next five holes to finish the front nine in two-under 34.
She started the back nine with birdies on #10, #11 and #13, before bogeys on three of her final five holes found her at even over the final nine holes. Schultz almost had her second eagle of the tournament as she hit almost the exact same shot as Leander on #11, but ended up with a birdie.
Regan De Guzman shot her second under-par round of the tournament with a four-under 68 and moved up to a tie for 20th place at five-under 139. Starting her round on #2, she went par-bogey-par before making her first of six birdies on #5. She then had par-bogey-par-birdie to finish her first eight holes at even par.
Playing the back-nine holes, De Guzman made a par on #10 before three consecutive birdies, a par on #14, birdie on #15 and three more consecutive pars led to a four-under 32 over the nine holes. She then made a par on #1 to finish the day at 68.
Freshmen Cristina Glebova and Alexandra Cooper each improved their scores from the first to second rounds. Glebova shot even-par 70 and is now tied for 60th at 145. Cooper shot her first under-par round of her collegiate career with a two-under 72. She is tied for 71st at two-over 146. Glebova made four birdies and 10 pars during her round, while Cooper had six birdies and eight pars during the round.
"The conditions were perfect today for scoring," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "All five players contributed, and that is nice to see. I think this gives them some confidence going into the final round tomorrow.
"We have been talking for a while about getting five solid scores in a round. It is fun when everybody feels a part of the effort, and they are excited to get to tomorrow and see what happens. We had the same attack mode today that we had yesterday and need to have it for one more round."
Final round action begins on Tuesday with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The Spartans will play with Michigan and Vanderbilt off of holes 1, 2 and 3.
