Colorado Springs, Colo. - San José State junior point guard Dezz Ramos has been named a 2015-16 Preseason Mountain West Co-Newcomer of the Year by a vote of the leagues 11 head coaches and media representatives. The announcement came from the Mountain West Conference office on Wednesday.

Ramos, a transfer student from Weber State, is the first Spartan to earn the honor, which she shares with Nevada's Stephanie Schmid.

A native of West Valley, Utah, Ramos started in 50 of the Wildcats 58 games in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. She averaged 10.4 points, 3.5 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.2 steals in her two years at Weber State.

She led the Wildcats in assists and three-pointers per game in both her season's in Orem.

She led the Big Sky Conference freshman in points and assists in 2012-13 and as a senior at Hunter High School earned Utah High School Female Athlete of the Year as well as first team all-state and all-region honors.

Based on 2014-15 Mountain West statistics, her 10.4 point scoring average is the third highest among league players returning from last year and her 3.5 assists are the seventh highest among MW returners.

The Preseason Mountain West All-Conference team is made up of Boise State's Brooke Pahukoa, Colorado State's Ellen Nystrom, Khadijah Shumpert of New Mexico, Funda Nakkasogulu of Utah State and Preseason Player of the Year Marquelle Dent of Wyoming. New Mexico's Jannon Otto earned Preseason Freshman of the Year honors.

Last season's regular season champions Colorado State is picked to repeat, garnering 12 first place votes. San José State, who knocked the Rams out of the Mountain West Tournament last year, has been chosen to finish in eighth place.

The Spartans begin the 2015-16 season with a pair of exhibition games. They host Sonoma State on November 1, at 2:00 p.m. and Holy Names on November 9 at 7:00 p.m. Both games are in The Event Center. The regular season kicks off at home against Southern Oregon on November 13. Tip off for that game is set for 7:00 p.m.
