Gama, Gavio Lead Volleyball At New Mexico

Albuquerque, N.M.-Nandyala Gama and Giulia Gávio led the San Jose State volleyball team in kills Thursday night, but the Spartans hit .078 in a 3-0 loss at New Mexico in a Mountain West Match.

Gama and Gávio each recorded eight kills in the match, and Gama had a team-best two blocks. Hana Tresnáková added six kills, while Sara Hibbs and Tyanna Roy had five kills apiece.

The Spartans hit just .078 for the match with 32 kills on 103 attempts and 24 errors. The team recorded four service aces, two by Yavianliz Rosado, and 42 digs. Rosado had a team-best 15 digs, while Luiza Andrade added 10 digs.

Allison Meehan started at setter and had 10 assists and four digs, while Mariana Mantellato made her Spartan debut with 18 assists, two digs and a block.

San Jose State had the early lead in set one, up 12-10, before New Mexico went on a 9-3 run to take a 19-15 lead and win the first set 25-17. The Lobos won the second by the same score, 25-17.

The third was close from the beginning as the teams traded the lead in the beginning. New Mexico opened up to a 20-15 lead, but the Spartans rallied to get within two at 24-22 before a service error gave the Lobos the win.

San Jose State is now 12-12 overall and 4-7 in the Mountain West. The team plays at Air Force this Saturday at 2 p.m. MDT.
