Facing the No. 4-ranked California Bears for the third time this season, San José State men's water polo beings a four game road trip on Sunday, Nov. 1 in Berkeley.
In the teams' first meeting, San José State (3-19, 0-6 MPSF) opened the NorCal Invitational against the Bears, losing 15-1. Driver Justin Contreras scored the Spartans' lone goal while goalkeeper Matej Matijevic led with 15 saves.
San José State kicked off UC Davis' Aggie Roundup with a rematch against the Bears (17-4, 3-1 MPSF), seven Spartans scored a goal each in the 17-7 loss. San José State split goalkeeper duties between Matijevic, Adam Sandor and Cole Williams, gathering a total of seven saves.
Leading the Spartans in scoring are Contreras and 2-meter defender Igor Miljan with 21 goals each. Contreras scored a season high four goals against the Santa Clara Broncos in San José State's season opener. Miljan had a season high three goals against the Spartans' win over the Connecticut College Camels.
Matijevic has started 21 games for the Spartans, making 199 saves while giving up 209 goals. Matijevic had a season high 19 saves in San Jose State's first meeting against Santa Clara.
The Bears are led in scoring by attacker Johnny Hooper with 54 goals. Goalkeeper Lazar Andric leads California with 172 saves in the cage.
After meeting California, San José State's road trip continues against Loyola Marymount, UC Irvine and South Bay rivals Santa Clara.
