San Jose, Calif. --- The San Jose State women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Utah State in Mountain West play Sunday afternoon at Spartan Soccer Field.
SJSU fended off multiple scoring opportunities for the Aggies in the first half, but Shyani Terukina finally broke through with the match's only goal in the 45th minute.
"In a 1-0 game like that you have to finish your opportunities," said Spartans' head coach Lauren Hanson. "I thought we came out in the second half and fought hard and showed focus for the full 90 minutes. They're a good team and we're a good team, but they just finished their opportunities."
After being outshot 9-3 in the first half, San Jose State (5-5-4, 3-1-0 MW) flipped the script, and did not allow a Utah State (7-5-1, 2-2-0 MW) shot until the 73rd minute. Although the teams finished with 12 shots a piece, the Spartans only put two on goal.
Samantha Orodpour took a season-high four shots, putting one on goal. Daria Manzano, in her first start, also put a shot on goal for SJSU. It was the first time in 15 matches that San Jose State had been shutout.
Zoe Makrigiannis made three saves and falls to 5-3-2 on the year. Utah State keeper Jeanie Woller made two saves and improved to 6-5-1.
San Jose State heads back out on the road for four consecutive Mountain West matches, beginning Thursday, October 8, at Air Force.
