Kansas City, Mo. - Sophomore Greg Harte scored an 86th minute goal, but the San Jose State men's soccer team came out on the short end of a 3-1 decision against the UNLV Rebels in the 2015 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Men's Soccer Tournament.
The Spartans end their season with a 6-11-2 record. The match also marks the final game for seniors Alex Anastasi, Emmanuel Espinoza, Eric Mendez, Victor Parra, Felix Petermann, and Mikhail Wingate-Pearse. UNLV advances to Friday's semifinal match with a record of 12-6-1.
Harte, who along with Jonathan Colunga led the team with five shots each, produced all his attempts in the second half and twice banged one off the post before finally finding the back of the net at the 85:53 mark.
Colunga, served a corner kick into the box where Harte headed it under UNLV keeper Richard Garness' left arm. It was Harte's first goal of the year and Colunga's fourth assist.
Similar to the team's game on Spartans Soccer Field in early October, a 1-0 win for the Rebels, San José State had the better run of play throughout the match, but couldn't convert its opportunities in the final third of the field.
SJSU outshot UNLV 22-to-12 and enjoyed a 9-to-2 advantage in corners. But in shots on goal, seven of the Spartans attempts were turned away while the Rebels converted on three of their seven.
UNLV's first goal, in the 18th minute, was a gift. Kevin Partida took a shot in the box, which deflected off Spartan defender Eddie Saydee's foot. The ball popped into the air, over the head off SJSU keeper Felix Petermann and in for a 1-0 lead
Just over three minutes later, Shota Takada took a throughball in the final third of the field, drove into the box and slotted a shot under an onrushing Petermann for a 2-0 lead for the Rebels.
The score remained 2-0 until the 72nd minute when Blake Balelo scored to the far post for a 3-0 advantage.
Rory Knibbs and Mendez each took three shots. Luis Vargas produced two shots and Kyler McLaughlin, Kyle O'Mahoney, Uriel Ayala and Parra attempted one shot each. Petermann made four saves.
UNLV's Blake Balelo and Danny Musovski led their team with three shots each and Garness stopped seven shots.
