SAN JOSE, Calif. -Two-time Oregon state champion Bryce Wortman from Klamath Falls, Ore. signed a National Letter-of-Intent to compete for San José State men's golf beginning in the 2016-17 academic year. Spartan men's golf head coach John Kennaday made the announcement.
"Bryce is an outstanding young man that we are excited to have come into the family. He has an outstanding junior record and he brings a lot to the table for us," said Kennaday.
The current senior from Mazama High School won the 4A boys golf state championship during his freshman and junior years as well as twice being named Skyline Conference Champion and Player of the Year.
Wortman also is a three-time winner on the Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT). The FCWT provides a venue of nationally ranked junior golf tournaments up to the age of 19. Wortman won three tournaments during the 2014-15 season, putting him atop the point lead nationally.
The lefty golfer won the first tournament at the FCWT at TPC Las Vegas shooting two-under 140 for his two day total on the par-71 course. He was the only player who shot under par in the tournament which was held on December 28-29, 2014.
Wortman's second tournament win came a month later at the FCWT Invitational. Wortman shot a three-over 147 to win by five strokes on the par-72 Half Moon Bay Golf Links in Half Moon Bay, Calif.
The Klamath Falls, Ore. native's third win came in February 2015 at the FCWT Classic. Wortman shot a two-over 146, winning by one stroke on the par-72 Sandpiper Golf Course in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Wortman played in a total of seven FCWT tournaments and finished in the top-10, six times last season.
This season, Wortman finished tied for fifth in his only tournament so far at the FCWT Classic at the Coyote Creek Golf Club in San Jose.
During the summer between Wortman's junior and senior years, he won the Junior Boys Division title at the 85th Oregon Junior Amateur Championship, defeating Spencer Tibbits (Vancouver, Wash.) 4 and 3. The tournament was held at the Eagle Crest Resort - Ridge Course in Redmond, Ore.
"Bryce is a tremendous addition to our potential lineup," said Kennaday.
