SEATTLE - The San José State University women's cross country team finished 18th out of 35 teams at the NCAA West Regional Championships for the best finish at the championship meet since 2006 when it placed 15th.
"Everyone ran well as they battled," said Spartans cross country coach Brad Wick. "It's a different type of race than any we ran this year as its more competitive with all the top teams from the West."
The Spartan runners also had to deal with the weather element that the Pacific Northwest is known for, rain.
"It was pretty nasty out there with the rain and the wind but we ran the best pack all year," said Wick in reference to the tactic of having the team's fastest runners race near the front, while the rest of the team runs in smaller groups or packs that are similar in ability. In each pack, a leader will push the pace so others could follow and hang on with the pack as long as possible.
The Spartans were paced by Jennifer Beckingham once again, finishing 59th overall out of 242 runners with a time of 21:43.5. The fifth Spartan scorer, Adilene Aldapa finished at 22:36.5. The 53-second spread between the top and fifth scorer was the best spread for a 6K race this year by the Spartans, bettering the previous best of 1 minute 33 seconds at the Santa Clara Invitational.
"Jen put herself in good position as she held her ground the whole way," said Wick about Beckingham who led the Spartans in each of the six meets this year.
Senior Lalida Maokhamphiou had her best race of the year finishing second on the Spartans and 91st overall with a time of 22:16.4. At last year's West Regional, Maokhamphiou finished 178th.
"For Lalida, it was an excellent way to finish her cross country career as she used her experience to step up and place within the top-100. She showed she's been there before," said the Spartans coach.
The next Spartan scorers were three freshmen finishing within eight seconds of each other. Jeanette Zambrano finished the 6K race in 22:29.3 (120th), Ashley Cahalan in 22:36.5 (128th) and Adilene Aldapa in 22:37.0 (129th).
Karina Nunes crossed the finish line in 23:23.0 (180th) and Melanie Fujiwara in 25:29.8 (240th).
The University of Oregon won the team championship with 79 points, edging out Boise State by one point, who were led by the individual champion, Allie Ostrander. Ostrander is the number one ranked NCAA Division I women's cross country runner who also won the Mountain West Conference Championship.
