San Jose, Calif. --- The San José State men's basketball team struggled to find its shot in a season-opening 74-54 loss to Idaho Saturday night at the Event Center.

The Spartans were 5-of-32 from the floor in the first 20 minutes, and the Vandals built a lead to as much as 22 points in the first half.

"Things didn't go our way early and we let that affect us a little bit," said SJSU head coach Dave Wojcik. "I thought there was a lid on our basket tonight. I have to give Idaho and coach Verlin credit. They stuck with the zone and we just didn't make shots."

In the first game of his Spartan career, freshman forward Ryan Welage finished with a double-double that included 15 points and a game-high 10 boards. His tip in at the halftime buzzer brought the crowd to its feet despite a 34-18 deficit heading into the locker room.

"Coach did a great job preparing us, but I think we just got hit by their speed and length," Welage said. "I felt like I was able to get into a bit of a rhythm, but it wasn't enough."

San José State (0-1) kept momentum from that final shot rolling into the start of the second half. Princeton Onwas scored five quick points and his three-ball at the 18:02 mark cut the Idaho (1-0) lead to 11 points. But that was as close as the Spartans would get.

Three Vandals finished in double-figures scoring, including Perrion Callandret who finished with a game-high 18. Nate Sherwood added 15 points and Victor Sanders finished with 13.

Gary Williams, Jr. joined Welage in double-digit scoring with 13 points and he collected seven rebounds.

San José State has a short turnaround for a game against Montana in The Event Center Monday night at 7:00 p.m. PST.
