Men's Water Polo Can't Hold On For Win

Santa Clara, Calif. --- Capturing the lead for the first time midway through the fourth, the San Jose State Spartans couldn't hold on as the Santa Clara Broncos win, 10-9, at Sullivan Aquatic Center.

Junior 2-meter defender Blake Grove's only goal of the contest gave the Spartans (3-23, 0-8 MPSF) a 9-8 lead over the Broncos (12-19, 2-4 WWPA) with 4:32 left in the final period after San Jose State trailed three and half quarters.

With 1:07 left in the match, freshman Owen Asalone evened the score, 9-9, for the Broncos and freshman Julian Fraser gave Santa Clara a 10-9 lead and the win with only 12 seconds to go. The Broncos win the season series against the Spartans, 3-1.

Leading the Spartans with three goals, freshman driver Alek Dendall scored San José State's first goal of the contest at the 3 minute mark of the second period and cut Santa Clara's lead to 5-4 on the final goal of the half with 5 seconds left. Dendall added his third goal in fourth period.

Sophomore 2-meter defender Igor Miljan scored two goals in the third period for San José State while freshman driver Cade Baldridge added two goals, one in the second and one in the third. Freshman driver Zachary Scudder scored a goal in the second.

Playing the entire game in the cage for the Spartans, sophomore goalkeeper Matej Matijevic made 10 saves against the Broncos.

Asalone lead the Broncos in scoring with three goals. Senior goalkeeper Joe Maestri had nine saves against the Spartans.

Looking to snap an eight game losing streak and pick up its first win in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, San José State host the Long Beach State 49ers in the both teams last match of the regular season on Sunday, November 15. The match begins at 12:00 p.m. and is free to the public and students.
