Laramie, Wyo.-- Tyanna Roy recorded a career-high 24 kills, Allison Meehan had her sixth double-double of the season, and the San José State volleyball team pushed Wyoming to five sets before falling 3-2 (22-25, 25-13, 24-26, 25-22, 15-11) Saturday night in a Mountain West match in Laramie, Wyo.
Roy led all hitters with 24 kills, the highest total for a Spartan this season. She hit .242 for the match with 62 attempts and nine errors and added four digs and two block assists.
Sara Hibbs was the only other Spartan with double-digit kills. She had 11 kills on 21 attempts and only two errors as she hit .429 for the match. Hibbs led the team with four service aces and six blocks, two solo and four assists.
Meehan recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 49 assists and 10 digs. She also had three blocks, one solo and two assists. Two other Spartans had double-digit digs - Yavianliz Rosado with 14 and Jamie Hirai with 13.
The Spartans and Cowgirls traded the lead seven times in the first set before SJSU took the lead for good at 23-22 on a Roy kill. Hibbs recorded two service aces to give San José State the 25-22 win.
After falling 25-13 in the second set, the two teams again played a back-and-forth third set. SJSU took the lead for good at 25-24 on a Wyoming attack error and won the set 26-24 on a kill by Nandyala Gama.
San José State had a 20-17 lead in the fourth set before Wyoming scored four consecutive points to take a 21-20 lead. The Spartans tied the set twice at 21-21 and 22-22 but could not take the lead as the Cowgirls won 25-23 to force a fifth set.
Wyoming jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the fifth set and never let the Spartans get closer than two points for most of the set in a 15-11 win for the Cowgirls. The Spartans hit .294 in the set (8-3-17), while Wyoming hit .500 (11-2-18).
San José State is 13-16 overall and 5-11 in the MW. The Spartans play the final road match of the season on Wednesday, November 18, at Nevada beginning at 6:30 p.m. PST. The team returns home on Saturday, November 21, for the final match of the 2015 season against San Diego State at 1 p.m. Admission is free to the contest inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets. Seniors Allison Meehan and Tyanna Roy will be honored that day.
