San Jose, Calif. --- The San José State Spartans women's swimming team gears up for the A3 Performance Invitational on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 19, 20 and 21, at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park.
"This meet is one of the primary focuses of our fall season. The team is very excited and ready to race," said Spartans head coach Sage Hopkins.
Leading the Spartans into the A3 Invitational is senior Riley Spitser. Last season at the A3 Invitational, Spitser finished first in the 1650 freestyle for the Spartans with a time of 16:43.72. She also took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:46.10. Both time are person best for Spitser.
"The senior class has made significant improvements this year and is one of our most dedicated senior classes in program history," Hopkins said. "I am really excited to see what they can do this week."
The season Spitser finished second against the No. 9-ranked California Bears in the 1000 freestyle a time of 10:14.94 on October 30. Spitser took the top spots in the 500 freestyle at the Pacific Invitational with a time of 4:58.17 and in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:15.57.
Other top finishers for the Spartans heading into the A3 Invitational include senior Amanda Buxbaum's second place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:24.41 against the Bears and junior Taylor Solorio's second place in the 100 freestyle against California.
Sophomore Collen Humel finished second in the 100 backstroke at the Pacific Invitational with a time 56.22 seconds.
The Spartans will be competing against Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield, Fresno State, Hawai'i, Loyola Marymount, Pacific, Pepperdine, No. 19-ranked UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and USC.
