CARLSBAD, Calif. -- The San José State men's golf team sits in 15th place at The Gifford Collegiate after 18 holes on Monday. The Spartans shot 22-over 306 on the par-71, 6,996-yard La Costa Legends course as the top-four scorers were all over-par.

Only nine out of 81 players in the field shot better than par, led by UCLA's Cole Madey at four-under 67. None of the teams shot even-par as Stanford and Washington are atop the team leader board at one-over 285.

"We struggled with our short game today again and it put us in a position to have some players on the team to force things a little bit," said Spartans head coach John Kennaday.

Seniors Cody Blick and Taylor Bromley had the lowest rounds for the Spartans, shooting two-over 73, tying them for 25th place individually. Both shot even-par on the front nine and two-over on the back nine.

Sophomore Brett Thawley made his 2015 fall season debut by shooting eight-over 79. Thawley shot four-over on the front and back-nine.

Sophomore Matthew Murray finished at 10-over 81, however, he was even-par on the back nine.

Freshman Kevin Velo also shot better in the back nine by going 42-41 to finish the day at 12-over 83.

"We need to be at a high level to compete in a tournament like this. Thankfully we have 54-holes and not 18. So we'll learn from it and bounce back tomorrow," said Kennaday.

The second round of The Gifford Collegiate will continue on Tuesday with 18 holes. Fans can follow with live scoring updates provided by Golfstat (Team Leader Board, Player Leader Board).
