Monterey Park, Calif. --- Posting her second NCAA B standard mark at the A3 Performance Invitational, sophomore Colleen Humel led the San Jose State Spartans women's swimming team to a fourth place finish Saturday, November 21.
"Fourth place is a great improvement from our placing in this meet last season. Overall, this weekend showed us where we are as well as where we are going leading into the championship half of our season," said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins.
Hummel finished third in the 200 backstroke with a NCAA B qualifying mark of 1:57.53, topping her best time set at the Mountain West Championships last February.
"We had an amazing number of girls on the team step up in crucial moments during this week's competition to edge out other programs," Hopkins said. "That is the kind of tenacity we love to see. "
Competing in the 1650 freestyle for the first time this season, senior Riley Spitser finished second with a mark of 16:39.07. Spitser was 4.35 seconds off her career best set last season at the A3 Invitational and 2.73 second behind UCLA's top finisher Sandra Soe.
"As we go into a time of hard training, this meet has set us up very nicely to accomplish some exciting things at the Conference Championships in February," Hopkins said.
The San Jose State relay team of Humel, Spitser, junior Taylor Solorio and sophomore Brenna Bushey took third place in the 400 freestyle relay with a mark of 3:23.74, the seventh best time in school history. The Spartans finished behind UCLA and UC Santa Barbara.
