Anchorage, Alaska --- Three Spartans finished in double-figures scoring, but a potent Toledo offense handed San José State an 89-74 loss in the opening round of the 2015 GCI Great Alaska Shootout.Sixteen (16) points a piece for Ryan Welage and Frank Rogers helped San José State (1-3) to a season-high 74 points. But the Rockets' offense was firing on all cylinders, paced by Jonathan Williams' career-high 26 points, and Nathan Boothe's triple-double."I thought we did a good job of competing and playing hard tonight," said Spartans' head coach Dave Wojcik. "We scored enough points, we just didn't defend. Our assist to turnover ratio was phenomenal."The two teams played even throughout the first half, but Toledo (3-1) went on a 9-0 run in the closing minutes. Williams scored his 17th and 18th point on a layup to put the Rockets ahead by 12 with 1:25 to go. Welage connected from beyond the arc for the second time in the half with 1:09 left to stop the run, and send SJSU into the halftime locker room with a 47-38 deficit."Their guards really hurt us tonight," Wojcik said. "We competed hard, but they would just go down and hit a big shot, or make a play."Princeton Onwas scored 11 of his 14 points in the last 20 minutes on 5 of 7 shooting. One of his career-high five assists was on the Spartans' first basket of the second half, another splash from deep by Welage, which made it 47-41.But Toledo's offense was there to answer any threats by the Spartans. Mosley Stuckey, who finished with 19 points for Toledo, hit consecutive layups after Welage's three. He went on to hit three more shots in the second half, which took Toledo's lead back from nine to 11.Frank Rogers' layup with 2:02 left was San José State's final basket, and Toledo scored the last seven points of the game. The Spartans have Thursday off to regroup before facing the loser of San Diego vs. Loyola (Ill.) on Friday at 12:00 p.m. AKT.
