Spartans Swamped By Hot Shooting Ducks

Nov. 30, 2015

Final Stats

Eugene, Ore. - The Oregon Ducks shot 61 percent for the game including hitting their first 11 shots of the third period and cruised to a 104-74 win over the San José State Spartans women's basketball team on Monday night in Matthew Knight Arena.

"They shot the lights out and we didn't. That's pretty much it," head coach Jamie Craighead said. "I think at one point early on they were shooting over 60 percent and we were at about 15. It jumpstarted them and we just couldn't recover."

Fifteen seconds in, Jasmine Smith scored the first bucket of the game, but that would be it for the Spartans for the next four minutes, as Oregon (6-0) went on a 13-0 run. Lexi Bando led the UO charge with seven of her career-high 35 points in the spurt.

SJSU stopped the bleeding with a pair of Dezz Ramos free throws, but after trading a couple of buckets, Bando canned a pair of threes in combination with a layup and the Ducks had a 28-13 lead after one period. The Spartans would get no closer.

Oregon's Jillian Ayllene had her 22nd consecutive double-double with 26 points and 20 rebounds as the Ducks led 54-32 at the half.

Smith scored the first four points of the second half to get the deficit to 18 and the Spartans shot 53 percent in the quarter. But Oregon hit its first 11 shots of the half and 14-of-16 (88 percent) in the period to blow the game open.

"When you have an inside game with a player like Jillian Ayllene and some shooters who are hitting from the outside, it is kind of like pick your poison. We didn't do a very good job of getting out to their shooters and once they got going it was pretty much over."

The Spartans (1-4) were paced by Dezz Ramos and Myzhanique Ladd who scored season-highs with 22 and 11 points, respectively. Ramos also led the team with five assists and committed no turnovers. Ladd was 3-for-6 from the floor, grabbed three rebounds, dished out three assists and had two steals.

"(Myzhanique) is playing better. It was fun to watch her tonight because her family was here and this is a place that her aunt played. We need her to play this way and are going to continue to need her to play better and better. She is playing within herself and the results are showing."

The Spartans won the turnover battle 20-to-11 and had a 29-20 advantage in points off turnovers. But in the battle of the boards, Oregon used its height to dominate 47-to-21 and outscored the Spartans 56-32 in the paint, but just 14-to-7 in second chance points, mainly due to its hot shooting.

A tough four-game road trip is behind the Spartans now. They play five of their next six games in The Event Center.

"In three of our last four games (at Saint Mary's, at Washington State and at Oregon) we've played some very tough teams in tough places…on the road. We won't face any stronger opponents the rest of the year. If we can understand that and move forward we will be better for it, but we have to get our shooters gong and figure out who we really are."

That quest begins with a Bay Area match-up against San Francisco on Sunday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m.
