San José, Calif.--The San José State volleyball team recorded its best hitting match of the season in a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-23, 25-16) of Utah State Thursday night in a Mountain West match in Spartan Gym. The Spartans are now 13-13 on the season and 5-8 in the MW.

The Spartans hit a season-high .411 with 52 kills on107 attempts and only eight hitting errors. Tyanna Roy led all hitters with 17 kills and hit .395 with 38 attempts and only two errors. Nandyala Gama had her best hitting night to lead the team at .529 with 11 kills on 17 attempts and only two errors.

San José State out-blocked the Aggies, 8-3, and were led by Sara Hibbs with five blocks, one solo and four assists, and Mariana Mantellato with a season-high five block assists.

Yavianliz Rosado led all players with 18 digs and added a career-best eight assists. Allison Meehan (20 assists) and Mantellato (15 assists) shared setting duties during the match.

The two teams battled in the first set, trading the lead three times and tying the score 10 times. The Spartans took a 15-14 lead on a Hibbs kill, and after the media timeout, Hana Tresnáková served nine consecutive points, including two service aces, to open the Spartan lead and eventual 25-16 win.

The second set found the two teams fighting even harder with eight lead changes and 15 tie scores. The Spartans led 23-20 on a Tresnáková kill, but Utah State continued to chip away, tying the set at 23-23, but back-to-back kills by the Spartan middles, Hibbs and Gama, gave SJSU the 25-23 win.

In the third set, the Spartans took control early and cruised to the 25-16 set win and 3-0 sweep of the Aggies. San José State broke a five-match losing streak to Utah State. The Spartans last win in the series was a 3-0 sweep on November 12, 2012.

The Spartans host second-place Boise State Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Admission is free to the match inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets.
