Men's Water Polo Swept In Two Games

Goalkeeper Matej Matijevic's 28 saves in two games wasn't enough for the San Jose State Spartans men's water polo team to take home a win in Southern California. The Spartans (3-22, 0-8 MPSF) lost to Loyola Marymount University, 13-9, on Friday, November 6, and then couldn't find the offensive groove, falling to UC Irvine, 11-3, on Saturday, November 7.

No. 7 UC Irvine 11, San Jose State 3

Irvine, Calif. --- Held scoreless through most of the first half, San Jose State's 2-meter defender Igor Miljan scored with 1:05 left in the second to break up UC Irvine's (13-9, 2-5 MPSF) 6-0 scoring run to start the match at Anteater Aquatics Complex.

The Spartans' defense was unable to contain the Anteaters in the first and second periods, giving up two goals to Matt Skinner and Lovre Milos along with solo shots from Pablo Carballo and Ryan Warde. San Jose State was down 6-1 at halftime.

UC Irvine continued to collect goals in the third period with Milos adding two more goals for a total of four in the match, Carballo scored his second goal and a single goal from Jared Osborn. With 22 seconds left in the third, Zachary Scudder found the back of the cage for the Spartans. The Anteaters led 10-2 after three.

Cade Baldridge scored the first goal and San Jose State's only goal of the final period with 5 minutes left in the contest. The final goal come on a shot by UC Irvine's Brock Ivancovich.

San Jose State's Matijevic made 18 saves against UC Irvine with 10 coming in the first half. Dylan Peterson made 13 saves for the Anteaters.

No. 14 Loyola Marymount 13, San Jose State 9

Los Angeles, Calif --- Goals from six Spartans wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit as the Loyola Marymount University Lions (11-11, 4-2 WWPA) with their eighth straight match, beating San Jose State, 13-9, at Burns Aquatics Center.

Down by three goals midway through the opening period, Baldridge scored San Jose State's only goal in the first as Loyola Marymount added on two more to lead 5-1 going into the second. Dayne Jagga scored twice for the Lions with Liam Jennis, Milutin Mitrovic and Manuel Di Stasio adding a goal each.

Scoring his third goal of the match to start the second, Jagga finished with five goals against the Spartans. San Jose State picked up two goals from Scott Reynolds on back-to-back shots while Akos Balazs and Justin Contreras added a goal each. Cutting into the Lions lead, the Spartans trailed 8-5 at halftime.

In the third period, the Lions maintained their lead by outscoring the Spartans 2-1. San Jose State's lone goal came on a shot by Scudder. Mitrovic scored Loyola Marymount's two goals.

San Jose State matched Loyola Marymount goal for goal in the final period but were unable to cut into the lead to capture the win. Balazs and Scudder scored their second goals for the Spartans in the fourth and Miljan added one goal. The Lions' Jagga scored his final goal and Jon Beck and Nicholas Zanobini contributed a goal.

Collection 10 saves in goal for the Spartans, Matijevic played all but the last 3O seconds against the Lions. In relief, goalkeeper Adam Sandor came into close out the game. Loyola Marymount's Kirk Wilenius made 15 saves in goals against San Jose State.
