Saturday's Result Earns Men's Soccer Bid To WAC Tournament

Nov. 7, 2015

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. - The San José State men's soccer team played the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners to a 0-0 draw on Saturday and in the process earned a point which secured a bid to the 2015 Western Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament.

Entering Saturday's match, the Spartans had several scenarios that would earn them a bid to next week's WAC Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. A win would have been the easiest, but after Air Force's loss at UMKC earlier in the day, SJSU needed only a draw to continue its season.

"The way we have played throughout our conference schedule, it would have been a crime if we hadn't gotten a chance to keep going," head coach Simon Tobin said after the match.

SJSU controlled the game from the outset. It outshot the Roadrunners 20-to-9 in the match and dominated the final third of the field. They created several dangerous chances in the box, but were unable to get a ball past Roadrunners' keeper Nicholas Clever.

Rory Knibbs, Eric Mendez, and Jonathan Colunga led the Spartans (6-10-2, 4-4-2 WAC) with four shots each. Colunga put three of his attempts on frame to lead the side. Knibbs had one shots on goal. Alex Alcaraz produced two shots. Kyler McLaughlin, Kyle O'Mahoney, Darren Sinclair, Mikhail Wingate-Pearse, Greg Harte and Victor Parra had one shot each.

In addition to the offense producing a season-high 20 shots and several dangerous chances, the defense played one of its finest matches of the year. The Spartans back line continually thwarted the CSU Bakersfield attack. Keeper Felix Petermann had four saves and earned his second clean sheet of the year.

The offense for the Roadrunners (7-5-5, 4-3-3 WAC) was paced by Adam Arana's two shots.

The day also marked the final home match for six San José State seniors. Alex Anastasi, Emmanuel Espinoza, Mikhail Wingate-Pearse, Mendez, Parra and Petermann were honored befor the match then participated for the final time at Spartan Soccer Field. However, they will get to continue their college careers for at least one more game.

The seeding and matchups for the WAC Tournament will be announced after Sunday's final regular season conference game.
