Stockton, Calif. - Following its best quarter of the season, a 32-point outburst in third, the San José State women's basketball team suffered its worst, just five points in the fourth, and lost to the Pacific Tigers 81-69 on Saturday afternoon in the Spanos Center.
The Spartans (1-7) trailed by 13 points, 45-32, heading into the third quarter. After shooting 25.7 percent in the first half they went 9-of-19 from the field in the third including three of five from beyond the three-point line and made 9-of-14 free throws.
On the first three possessions of the second half SJSU got treys from Rachol West, Ellie Stevens and Dezz Ramos. After a Nyre Harris layup on the Spartans next possession, the UOP lead was down to five points, 48-43.
The Tigers (5-4) pushed the advantage back to double digits at 53-43 with 5:54 to play in the quarter. But San José State outscored Pacific 21-6 to close out the period. Nearly half the damage for the Spartans, nine points, was done at the line.
Ramos had seven of her team-high 18 points in the final five minutes of the third. Myzhanique Ladd, who finished the game in double figures, added six. Ladd also pulled down a career-high seven rebounds in the game. With the momentum seemingly in the Spartans favor, they took a 64-59 lead into the final 10 minutes.
All San José State's hard work getting back into the game went by the wayside as they made just two of 15 shots in the final quarter, were outscored 22-5 in the period, and lost 81-69.
For the game the Spartans made 9 three-pointers to the Tigers' five and sank 20 free throws to UOP's 10. Both teams took 73 shots, but SJSU made just 20 attempts (27.4 percent) to Pacific's 33 (45.2 percent) which proved to be the difference in the game.
Two Spartans finished the game with double doubles. Jasmine Smith had 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Harris, in what might be her only college appearance in her hometown of Stockton, finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. It was the second double double of the season for Harris and the second of her college career. Ladd finished with 10 points and pulled down a career-high seven rebounds.
For the Tigers, Desire Finnie led all scorers with 21 points and Mauriana Clayton grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Spartans host New Mexico State on Thursday, November 17 in The Event Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
