Spartans Can't Stop Montana State In 91-83 Loss

Dec. 13, 2015

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. --- The San José State men's basketball team allowed a season-high in points and was unable to hang onto a slim lead in the final minutes of a 91-83 loss to Montana State Sunday in the Event Center."More important than anything tonight, was that we just didn't defend," said Spartans' head coach Dave Wojcik. "When you're giving up open threes or layups you can't beat teams. Bottom line is we didn't defend and we didn't rebound."The Bobcats (5-4) used a 13-0 run lasting 2:41 to take command of the game in the first half. But the Spartans made a run of their own, which included six made baskets in a row.Isaac Thornton tipped and stole a Montana State pass, and hit Cody Schwartz who banged a three in transition which tied the game, 64-64, with 10:55 remaining. Just under a minute later, Thornton stole another one on an inbounds play, and took it the distance for a fast-break dunk that gave SJSU its first lead of the second half. The two teams went back and forth over the next six minutes. San José State led 76-75 with 3:59 remaining, but allowed three consecutive three-point plays to the Bobcats. Marcus Colbert made a layup and his free throw after being fouled, and Sarp Gobeloglu hit two threes to put Montana State up 82-77 with 2:34 left.Princeton Onwas grabbed his own miss, and made a put-back to make it a three-point game, but that was as close as the Spartans would get as the Bobcats used late free throws to pull away for good."Defense wins games," Onwas said. "We just didn't play defense. We have a long way to go if the team is this lackadaisical on defense."Schwartz led the way scoring for SJSU with 16 points, Onwas joined him in double-figures with 13.Tyler Hall hit all four of his threes and led Montana State with 24 points. Gobeloglu ended with 16 points and Colbert added 12 points and nine assists."I told the guys to go in and finish strong on their finals, and then we are spending all of the allotted time in a day working on the defense," Wojcik said.Next up for San José State will at Seattle University on December 20 at 6:00 p.m. PST.
