Five Score In Double Figures in 79-58 Win For Women's Basketball

San José, Calif.--Getting double-figure points from five different players, the San José State women's basketball team won 79-58 over UC Irvine Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at The Event Center.

Dezz Ramos led all scorers with 20 points for the Spartans. She was 8-for-13 from the field including 2-for-4 from three-point range. Jasmine Smith and Nyre Harris each had 14 points, while Emily Vann and Riana Byrd came off the bench to post 11 points a piece. Smith was 6-for-8 from the field, while Byrd was 4-for-9 including 3-for-5 from three-point range.

The Spartans won the scoring battle in all four periods and shot 45.5 percent from the field (30-66). The team also recorded more assists, 19, than turnovers, 12. Harris led the team with six assists and grabbed a team-best five assists in the win.

The only stat San José State did not exactly control was the rebounding as UCI has a slight 44-42 edge. Byrd led the team with a season-best nine rebounds, while Smith and Harris each grabbed six boards.

The two teams played close for the first period. UC Irvine jumped out to a 13-9 lead with 4:01 left in the period before San José State scored 10 of the next 11 points to take a 19-14 lead after the first.

San José State scored the first six points of the second period to take a 25-14 lead and did not let the Anteaters get within six points the rest of the half.

The final two periods found the Spartans extending the lead into double-digits and outscoring the Anteaters 45-31. The team led by as much as 27 twice in the fourth quarter before winning 79-58.

With the win, San José State improves to 2-8 on the year, breaking an eight-game losing streak. The team plays its final non-conference game this Tuesday, December 22, at 3 p.m., inside The Event Center.
