Bakersfield, Calif. --- Taking the top spot in 12 of the 16 events, the San Jose State Spartans women's swimming and diving team defeated the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 155.5-133.5 at the Hillman Aquatics Center on Thursday, December 31.
"I am very happy with how the team performed today," said San Jose State Head Coach Sage Hopkins. "The team has been training very hard and it was in the low 30's when we started warming up this morning.
The Spartans had four swimmers earn first place finishes in two individual events. "The ladies did a fantastic job of ignoring the weather and performed exactly how we had hoped," Hopkins said.
Finishing first in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, senior Brynne Beneke posted a time of 24.55 in the 50 freestyle and 52.97 in the 100 free. Junior Taylor Solorio swam to a first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a mark of 1:07.06 and in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:26.95.
Sophomore Colleen Humel had two first place finishes against CSU Bakersfield, earning top marks in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.27 and 200-yard backstroke with a touch in 2:05.76.
"It is great seeing the team coming together and getting stronger each week. We are looking forward to a couple of hard days of training leading into our Sunday meet and Tuesday scrimmage with Boise State and San Diego State," Hopkins said.
In the 200-yard medley relay, Humel, Beneke and Solorio were joined by sophomore Brenna Bushey to comprise the Spartans' first place relay team. The first place relay team finished with a mark of 1:47.40. San Jose State also placed second in the relay with a time of 1:50.24 with the team of sophomore Taylor Lehr, senior Amanda Buxbaum, freshman Marley Maluafiti and sophomore Angel Van Hofwegen.
Sophomore diver Cari Reiswig scored a season best mark, 302.43, and finished first in the 3-meter springboard for the Spartans. Reiswig qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships with a previous season high of 289.95 in the season opener at California.
Senior Alli Davis finished first in the 200-yard freestyle and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle. Senior distance swimmer Riley Spitser was uncatchable in the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle. Spitser finished with a 9.89 second lead, posting a mark of 5:05.79, in the 500 freestyle and a 6.20 second lead, with a time of 10:31.11, in the 1000 freestyle.
Also picking up first place finishes were freshman Marley Maluafiti in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 2:08.01. Maluafiti finished with a 13.64 second lead over the Roadrunners' Alexis Cannon.
