San Jose, Calif. --- Ranked No. 18 among the women's Division I mid-major conferences, the San Jose State women's swimming and diving team returns to action against the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs and Cal Lutheran Kingsmen on Saturday, December 5, in Santa Cruz.
"We're pleased to be ranked 18 in the Division I Mid-Majors. I think it gives the team a little bit of a boost," said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins. "When they look at the mid-major ranking they are noticing the Mountain West teams and seeing the traditional powers, Nevada, Boise State and San Diego State, ahead of us. Then looking for who we are ranked ahead of in the conference, I think they like to see that."
Last season in a dual between UC Santa Cruz and Simon Fraser University, the Spartans placed first in 10 of 13 events to take the top spot with 162 points. Coach Hopkins will be making roster adjustments at the tri-meet.
"This meet gives us the opportunity to move some people around into events they don't traditionally have opportunities to race in," said San Jose State head coach Sage Hopkins.
The Spartans had first places finishes from seniors Riley Spitser in the 100 and 500 freestyles, Alli Davis in the 200 freestyles and Brynne Beneke in the 50 freestyle against UCSC and Simon Fraser last season. San Jose State also had two first place finishes in the 400 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.
"Our expectations are that everyone is going to be racing hard," Hopkins said.
Sophomore diver Cari Reiswig in back in the Spartans lineup after withdrawing from competition at the Trojan Diving Invitational on Friday, November 13. According to Hopkins, Reiswig tweaked her back during platform diving practice leading up to the Trojan Invite.
"She back to 100 percent now," Hopkins said.
Posting career best scores in the springboard competition last season against UCSC and Simon Fraser University, Reiswig scored a 301.45 in the 1-meter and 345.85 in the 3-meter. Both scores set school records.
Sophomore diver Kylie Fonseca also set a person best at last season meet, scoring 240.20 points in the 1-meter springboard for the tenth best score in Spartans history.
