San Jose, Calif. - Ellie Stevens had a career-high 16 points and Dezz Ramos added 19, but the San José State women's basketball team lost to the San Francisco Dons 82-78 on Sunday afternoon on Walt McPherson Court.
Stevens, a native of Ocean Grove, Victoria, Australia, was 3-for-6 from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Ramos led the Spartans in scoring for the third game in a row. She and Nyre Harris topped the squad with four assists each. Jasmine Smith and Riana Byrd scored nine points a piece and grabbed six and seven rebounds, respectively.
The Spartans, who hadn't appeared on their home court in 23 days and were winless in four tries on the road, began the game against the Dons looking like they would get back in the win column. A Rachol West three-pointer three minutes into the first quarter gave San José State a 6-2 lead.
With 1:43 to go, Myzhanique Ladd drained a three-pointer, and Stevens hit a jumper with just over a minute left in the first to put SJSU up 18-15. USF closed the period with a layup and a Zhane Dikes jumper to take a 19-18 lead into the second quarter, a lead they would not relinquish over the next 30 minutes.
USF (7-2) quickly built a seven-point advantage in the first minute of the second period, but back-to-back threes from Ramos, returned it to a one-point game 25-24. The Dons worked the ball inside the rest of the half, maintained a single-digit lead and led 43-37 heading to the locker room at the half.
SJSU (1-5), playing more slowly than usual, attempted as season-low 29 shots in the first 20 minutes, turned the ball over 12 times and scored just two fast-break points. But perhaps the biggest issue was that they were just 6-for-12 from the free throw line.
San Jose State hit 47 percent from the floor to the Dons 27 percent in the third period, but could not take advantage of its possessions. The team committed seven turnovers and despite San Francisco's poor shooting saw the Dons build its biggest lead of the game 56-44 with 5:01 to go in the quarter.
A 12-3 run, capped by three free throws from Stevens, who was fouled while attempting a three-pointer, made the score 59-56 with just over 1:22 to go. But USF responded with a bucket to close the quarter and led 61-56 after three.
Four times in the fourth quarter, SJSU cut the San Francisco lead to three points and each time the Dons responded with a three-pointer to push the lead back out to six and won by four, 82-78.
For the game the Spartans controlled the boards 45-to-32 and had a 21-to-13 advantage in second-chance points, but committed 23 turnovers to USF's 10 and had only seven fast break points.
The Dons had three players in double figures led by Taylor Proctor's 24 points. Dikes scored 23 and Rachel Howard added 15, 12 of which came on three pointers.
The Spartans return to action on Tuesday, December 8 against South Dakota. Tipoff in the Event Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
