San José, Calif.-- Erica Matos and Allison Bellingham tied for first on vault and uneven bars, respectively, to lead the San José State women's gymnastics team Friday night in a meet against Sacramento State at The Event Center. The Spartans scored a 193.400 in the meet but fell to the Hornets who scored a 194.900.
Matos, the anchor of the vault team, tied her career best with a 9.825 Friday evening to tie Hornet Julia Kroner for first place. Bellingham, a last-minute replacement in the bars lineup, scored a 9.775 in her first bars routine of her Spartan career and tied for first with Sacramento State's Cassie Benning.
The Spartans started the meet on the vault with a 48.250 and trailed Sacramento State by only .250 after the first rotation. Matos led the vault team with her 9.825, followed by Herr at 9.750, Kaitlin Won at 9.725, Hannah Gilbert at 9.650, Rachel Heinl at 9.300 and Ellie Pascoe-Long at 8.950.
The second rotation found San José State on the bars and scoring a 48.425. After Bellingham's 9.775, Won had a 9.750, Haleigh Shepard and Marissa Unpingco at 9.650, Alyssa Kaschak at 9.600 and Herr at 9.075. The Spartans closed the gap on the Hornets to .175 at 96.850-96.675.
San José State then moved to beam, while Sacramento State performed on floor. The Hornets scored a 49.075 on floor compared to a 48.375 by the Spartan beam team. The beam was led by Herr's 9.725, followed by Won at 9.700, Alisa Bogdan and Bellingham at 9.675, Amy Bellingham at 9.600 and Kaschak at 8.850.
The Spartan floor team scored a 48.350 to give San José State a 193.400 team score. Shepard led the floor team with a 9.750, followed by Herr and Pascoe-Long at 9.725, Won at 9.675, Matos at 9.475 and Bogdan at 9.425.
The Spartans compete next Sunday, January 24, in a tri-meet at Stanford with California. The meet begins at 2 p.m. inside Burnham Pavilion.
