Jan. 16, 2016

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. â€" The San Jose State women's basketball team couldn't halt a run by the Fresno State Bulldogs late in the fourth quarter and lost 59-54 on Walt McPherson Court on Saturday afternoon.

Fresno State, which led 44-43 with 5:32 to play, got back-to-back three-point plays from Toni Smith and Shaquanna Collins to fuel a 10-2 run. It gave the Bulldogs a 54-45 lead with 2:17 to play and from there Fresno State closed out SJSU for a five-point win.

The loss snapped San José State's three-game Event Center winning streak over the Bulldogs and was the team's first loss at home this year in Mountain West play.

Dezz Ramos led the Spartans (6-11, 4-2 MW) with 20 points. It is the 15th time in 16 games she has reached double figures and the ninth time she has scored at least 20 point this year.

Emily Vann, coming off the bench in a season-high 20 minutes of action, had 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including a pair of three pointers.

Each team went 7-for-15 (47 percent) from the floor in the first 10 minutes and the game was tied 15-15 after the first quarter. Vann scored eight of the Spartans' 13 points in the second period and SJSU led 28-27 as the teams went into the locker room.

The Bulldogs (9-7, 5-0 MW) outscored San José State 15-11 in the third period despite the Spartans shooting 21 percent. Following a Ramos three-pointer with 6:08 to play, SJSU had a 36-34 lead. But the team missed its next six shots and turned the ball over two times. Fresno State scored eight-straight points to take a 42-36 lead inside two minutes left in the period. The Spartans closed the gap to 42-39 heading into the fourth with Ramos scoring eight of the team's 11 points in the third.

The teams combined for four missed shots and four turnovers in the first three minutes of the fourth before a Ramos three-pointer tied it up 42-42 with 6:59 to play. A minute and a half later it was 44-43 in favor of Fresno State. They went on their 10-2 run and closed the game out to remain undefeated in conference play.

The Spartans' defense held Fresno State's center Bega Faz Davalos, her team's leading scorer and rebounder, five points and three rebounds below her season average, but were still outscored 38-to-16 in the paint.

SJSU's 54 points and 19 field goals tie for season lows which were established at Colorado State. Both teams struggled from the free throw line. The Spartans shots 56 percent (9-of-16) while Fresno State was slightly better at 59 percent (13-of-22).

Smith led Fresno State with 19 points. Collins was also in double figures with 14 points.
