Spartans Lose Heartbreaker To Boise State

Jan. 20, 2016

Final Stats

San Jose, Calif. - With 17 points and 13 rebounds, senior Riana Byrd had her third double double of the season and the 24th of her career, but the Boise State Broncos got a pair of career-high 39 points from Miquelle Askew and defeated the San Jose State women's basketball team 78-75 on Wednesday night in The Event Center.

Byrd's 17 points tied her season-high and give her 978 for her career. She is 22 points from becoming the 14th player in SJSU women's basketball history. Her 13 rebounds were her best effort this year and give her 938 for her career. Byrd is eight boards from equaling Rhoda Chew (946 rebounds from 1982-85) for second place on the program's all-time list.

Throughout the game the Spartans (6-12, 4-3 MW) pushed the pace and got production up and down its lineup. They held a 19-10 lead after the first 10 minutes led by five of Dezz Ramos' team-high 18 points. San Jose State's defense held the Broncos to 15 percent shooting (3-of-19) in the quarter.

In the second period, the Broncos (11-6, 4-2 MW) game plan came to light. Askew scored 11 points and Shalen Shaw added nine. Those two would go on to combine for 60 of their team's 78 points, as well as, 13 and 12 rebounds, respectively.

Spartans were up 32-19 with 5:58 to play before the intermission, but Boise State closed the half on a 15-5 run led by Shaw's nine points and four from Askew. The Broncos would shoot 63 percent in the second quarter and trim the SJSU lead to 38-34 heading to the locker rooms.

The twosome continued to its hot shooting in the third quarter, they combined for 14 of their team's 22 points in the period. Myzhanique Ladd, who was 7-for-10 on the night for 16 points, hit jumper with 7:56 to play in the third to stake the Spartans a 45-38 lead. It would be the team's biggest led of the second half, but it was short lived.

Two and a half minutes later the game was tied 47-47. The teams would trade buckets for the remainder of the period and went to the fourth quarter tied 56-56.

Tied at 58-58, 30 seconds into the fourth, Boise State went on a 9-3 run to open a 67-61 lead with 6:48 to go. The Spartans responded with a pair of buckets from Ramos and one from Byrd to tie the game at 67-67 inside five minutes left.

Boise State had one more run in them. It was eight straight points by Askew and they led 75-69 with 2:42 to play.

After a Ladd layup and a pair of Byrd free throws it was down to a two-point game, 75-73 with 32 seconds to play. The Spartans had to foul and Boise State's Yaiza Rodriguez knocked down a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left.

Nyre Harris hit a layup with 11 seconds remaining to get it back to a two-point game, 77-75. The Spartans fouled Shaw, who made her first free throw but missed the second. The Broncos led 78-75 with nine seconds to go.

Ramos, who hit a game-winning three at Wyoming last Wednesday night, had a shot from the left side of the arc to tie it with two seconds, but tonight there would be no heroics as the shot rimmed out and the Spartans lost by three.

Boise State won the battle in the paint 48-to-28, but the Spartans out rebounded the Broncos 45-to-43. For the second straight game SJSU shot less than 60 percent from the line.

On Wednesday, San Jose State was 10-of-17 from the line and is 19-of-33 in the last two games (57 percent), which they have lost by a combined seven points.

In addition to Askew's career-high 39 points, Shaw added 21. The rest of the Broncos roster scored 18 points.

San Jose State returns to Mountain West action on Saturday at the University of New Mexico. Tip off between the Lobos and Spartans in Albuquerque, N.M. is set for 2:00 p.m.
