Albuquerque, N.M. - The San Jose State women's basketball team made a season-low 17 baskets and equaled a season-low shooting percentage, hitting 27.4 percent, en route to a 71-57 loss to the University of New Mexico on Saturday afternoon in WisePies Arena formally know as The Pit.

In SJSU's three games on the New Mexico Lobos' home floor the Spartans have yet to come away with a victory, falling by an average of 16 points per game. UNM is also the only team San Jose State has yet to earn at least one win against among the 11 schools, which make up the Mountain West Conference.

In a bright spot for the Spartans (6-13, 4-4 MW), Myzhanique Ladd finished with a team-high 18 points, one off her career-best. She shot 4-of-8 from the field and set career-highs in free throw attempts (11) and makes (9) and she equaled her career-high with four steals.

Ladd got San Jose State off to a 2-0 lead on a jumper 14 seconds into the game and following a Dezz Ramos bucket with 8:03 to play in the first quarter, SJSU led 4-2.

But that's where the wheels came off for the Spartans. For the next six minutes and 43 seconds they went scoreless. The team missed 12 consecutive shots and turned the ball over four times.

When Jasmine Smith finally scored, with 1:20 to play in the quarter, SJSU's two-point lead had turned into a 12-point deficit, 18-6. New Mexico (10-7, 3-3 MW) hit two more shots and led 22-6 after 10 minutes.

San Jose State shot 3-of-21 (14.3 percent) and missed on all nine of its three-point attempts in the period. Meanwhile, New Mexico was 7-of-14 from the floor, hit two threes, made 6-of-10 free throws and never looked back.

Riana Byrd, in her first start of the year, entered the game eight rebounds from tying Rhoda Chew for second on the program's career-list. She grabbed four of her team-high six boards in the first quarter. She enters next Wednesday's game against Colorado State two rebounds from tying Chew, who grabbed 946 rebounds from 1982-85.

New Mexico used its size inside and offensive rebounding to build and then maintain its lead throughout the game. Three Lobo starters were in double figures, led by Cherise Beynon's 17 points and 10 rebounds. Khadijah Shumpert had 16 points and nine rebounds and Whitney Johnson finished with 11 points and seven boards.

New Mexico had a 38-to-20 advantage in points in the paint and outrebounded the Spartans 52-to-31. The Lobos had 19 offensive boards, which they turned into 24 second-chance points.

San Jose State got the lead down to nine points twice before the intermission and once early in the third period. But behind 50 percent shooting in the third period, New Mexico built its biggest lead of the game, 25-points.

At the final buzzer New Mexico had defeated the Spartans by 14 points, the sixth time in as many tries the Lobos have beaten SJSU.

Ramos finished with 17 points. It is the 17th time in 18 games that she has reached double figure scoring. Ladd and Ramos combined for 35 of the team's 57 points. Ellie Stevens and Jasmine Smith each had eight points and Andrea Kohlhaas sank a three-pointer.

After opening Mountain West play 4-1, the SJSU has lost three-straight. The Spartans return home to San Jose and host the Colorado State Rams on Wednesday, January 27. Tipoff in the Event Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
